Natural creaminess, produced by fermentation.
Biophelion makes massoia lactone by fermentation in Jena, Germany: the same molecule that gives dairy, plant based and confectionery products their creamy coconut note. First evaluations describe a cleaner, more defined coconut note than bark oil.
Not everything natural is good for nature. Until now, massoia lactone came from the bark of Cryptocarya massoy, a wild tree in Papua listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Harvesting the bark kills the tree, and there is no verified plantation supply.
Same CAS, different composition. Bark oil is a botanical extract that also carries C12 lactone, benzyl benzoate and other co-extracted compounds. Our massoia lactone is a single defined molecule.
- ≥95% C10 massoia lactone (HPLC area %)
- CAS 54814-64-1, FLAVIS 10.037, C10H16O2
- No C12 lactone, no benzyl benzoate, no co-extracted botanicals
- Coconut, creamy, buttery and sweet
- Colourless to pale yellow liquid
- Consistent quality batch to batch, independent of harvest
- Natural flavouring substance under EU Regulation 1334/2008; vegan; Kosher and Halal certification in progress
Applications: plant based and dairy drinks, ice cream, yoghurt, confectionery and tropical beverages. Effective at low ppm levels in the finished product.
Not a one to one replacement for bark oil: the cleaner profile may need slight rebalancing of existing formulations.
